What density is used for steel?
0.2836 lb per cubic inch (490 lb per cubic foot), the standard for carbon steel. Stainless uses 0.289 and aluminum 0.0975.
How accurate are tube and angle weights?
Square and rectangular tube use AISC corner radii and land within about 1% of AISC table weights. Angles are calculated with sharp corners and land within about 1% of table values.
How do I find the weight of a W beam?
The second number in a rolled shape's size is its weight per foot. A W8x31 weighs 31 lb/ft, so a 20' piece weighs 620 lb.
How do I estimate plate weight quickly?
Steel plate weighs about 40.8 lb per square foot per inch of thickness. A 1/4" plate is about 10.2 lb per square foot.
