Frequently asked questions
How does the cut list optimizer work?
It packs each stick with the combination of remaining pieces that fills it most completely, then runs thousands of randomized re-packs to try to save another stick. Saw kerf and end trim are subtracted from every stick.
What kerf should I use?
A cold saw or bandsaw is typically 1/16" to 1/8". An abrasive chop saw is about 1/8". Plasma is about 1/16" to 1/8" depending on amperage. When in doubt, use 1/8".
Why trim the end of each stick?
Mill ends are rarely square or clean. Trimming 1/4" to 1/2" off the first end gives you a true starting cut.
Can I enter feet and inches?
Yes. You can type 5'-6 1/2", 5' 6-1/2", 66.5 or 66 1/2. Metric works too: 1500mm.
Is 20 foot or 24 foot stock better?
It depends on your cut lengths. The optimizer compares 20', 24' and 40' automatically so you can order whichever gives the best yield.
